…so the photos start here!
Suzanne and I returned from a simply awesome 18-day trip this morning, the best we’ve done yet without a doubt. The combination of non-stop stunning scenery, great birding, flowers and wildlife, some fantastic accommodation and hospitality, and the flexibility and peace and quiet of independent self-drive was a winner for sure.
This first post is intentionally light on words (while we’re ploughing through thousands of photos, and sadly getting ready for work tomorrow)… but here’s a small selection of photos to whet the appetite. The subject species are all connected by a theme related to the holiday – leave a comment if you can work out where we’ve been, and what the connection is!

Cape! I was volunteering down there in July, amazing place with amazing birds.
What's the stripey one at the bottom?
Blimey - quick work there, Oliver! I agree completely with the word "amazing". Where were you based, and where did you go birding?
Jono - no idea what it is, I was trying to take photos of a Denham's Bustard when the damn great stripey thing kept getting in the way. And would you like me to provide comprehensive directions to where it was, so you can go for a look?
That's not a bad start for photo's, very nice.
I was based at Kariega Game Reserve near Port Elizabeth. My birdwatching was limited to from the vehicle, the small garden, the botanical gardens in Grahamstown and an excellent weekend canoe/camping trip. I still managed 137 bird species.
